A particularly rare moment
The Santa Fé de Antioquia (Medellín) zoological park has just announced the birth of a baby monkey belonging to a critically endangered species: the Magdalena spider monkey ( Atèles hybridus ). This is only the third birth of this species since 2012.
In its natural state, this species is normally found in the forests along the Rio Magdalena. Unfortunately, it is one of the 25 most endangered primate species in the world, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Destruction of its natural habitat, livestock farming, intensive agriculture, hunting and illegal trafficking are the main causes of its disappearance.
